The Coast Guard is suspending a search of a sailboat off the coast of California after a series of distress signals. The man who radioed The Coast Guard stated that there were a couple and two children on board. The search has costed a few hundreds of thousands of dollars. The possibility of a hoax is being brought into question. The Coast Guard has claimed that they receive many hoax calls and they take it very seriously. In 2011 they had 54 probably hoaxes out of 7,247 mayday cases. On Sunday afternoon, they received another distress signal from the same source that stated "This is the Charm Blow, we are abandoning ship." The Coast Guard has looked into several data bases and still can not find any boat with that name. The search area for the boat is about the size of West Virginia.

It would be sad if there was actually a family who was stuck out on a ship getting no help, but if this were a hoax that would be dissappointing. I think it is sad that it has come into question whether cries for helps are actually real or just for attention. I don't understand why people feel the need to spend goverment money, the time of people, and cause people to worry for something that they chose to make up.

I agree with Laura; if those people who were putting out the fake distress signals were put in a situation where they needed help immediately, I don't think they would be okay knowing that they may never be found because it was thought to be a hoax. When pranks start potentially messing with peoples well being, they that's when you know that have gone too far and are completely pointless.

I agree with both Laura and Katie. If people have the need to make fake cries of help there is something wrong. By doing this you are spending time and money of the goverment that could be better used somewhere else. However I dont understand why the goverment would consider this fake cries of help, are they not trusting?

This may be a very bold and arrogant statement but people need to mature, stop being self centered, and think about the greater good. The money, time, and resources wasted to locate these "people" could be used in so many other and more productive ways. Plus if it is a hoax it just does not make the government trust when they get distressed calls and they may stop investigating these calls for help.
