Obama's Shifts May Affect US Legal Plan on Gay Marriage

Last May, President Obama announced his support for gay marriage and said that states should individually tackle the issue. In his Inaugural Address, he alluded to taking a more national solution. Obama recognizes that the states are each working on solutions at their own rates. United States v. Windsor is a case that challenges the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act which defined marriage as a union between a man and woman. In history, marriage laws have always been left up to the states. Obama said that the DMA "tried to federalize what has historically been state law." Another case, Hollingsworth v. Perry, will seek to overturn California's Proposition 8 which banned same-sex marriage. Obama said, "Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commute to one another must be equal, as well," in his Inaugural Address.

It is true that state laws regarding this issue will not give a final solution when it comes to gay marriage. If Obama wants to give gays their equal rights than it must be done nationally.
I believe that love cannot be legislated; every human should have the freedom to spend their life with whomever they choose. However, the sanctity of marriage is something no one will easily tamper with. Personally, I think the freedom of gay individuals goes beyond marriage, and lawful gay marriage will not completely satisfy anyone. It is a huge puzzle with many nuances. Yes, we are all created equal, but a big question is whether gays are created gay.

I agree with what Caswell said. We can't have different states allowing same sex marriages, while other states still do not let it happen. I believe that same sex marriage needs to be something national, or they will never truly have the right. The law against same sex marriage will continue to grow more and more outdated as time goes on, just like past issues and laws have. I believe that now is the time to make the change and let everybody be happy with who they love. It affects people if they are not allowed to get married, but it does not affect people as much when two other people get married.
